Building BobSmithPhotography.net has stopped expanding because I've been overwhelmed with spam on the comment forums. So, if you're here and have questions about web design come and visit Forums, Blogs, Wikis dot com. It has articles that I've written, some of which are also here, and a web design forum as well so you can ask any questions you may have. There is still a lot of good stuff here though, so poke around the links and take a look.

Blog

A blog, short for web log, is a web site where the publisher posts articles; often as a sort of online diary.  While blogs can be on any subject, the articles are usually sorted so that the most recent posting is at the top.

Most blogs show postings chronologically.  But normal web pages can do that as well.  Blogs typically also have the following features:

  • Permalink - A URI that will allow a visitor to return to a posting.
  • Comments - Visitors can leave comments on postings.  Originally these showed up as soon as they were posted, but with the rise in comment spamming most blogs moderate their comments before they show up.
  • Categories - Allow for similar postings to be grouped together, but still show the chronologically.
  • Trackback - When another blogger references your blog they will typically trackback to your blog.  This lets you know who is writing about you.
  • Blogroll - A list of other blogs that the blogger reads.

You'll notice many of these features show up on other site that are not specifically blogs.  For example, this site has a place where you can enter comments and the index page lists the 3 most recent pages chronologically.  But it is still not a true blog.
