Building BobSmithPhotography.net has stopped expanding because I've been overwhelmed with spam on the comment forums. So, if you're here and have questions about web design come and visit Forums, Blogs, Wikis dot com. It has articles that I've written, some of which are also here, and a web design forum as well so you can ask any questions you may have. There is still a lot of good stuff here though, so poke around the links and take a look.

AdSense on business sites

I'm amazed when I see a web site for a business with AdSense ads.  Yes, you'll get a few cents when somebody clicks on an ad.  But they are probably clicking on the ad of one of your competitors.

For those that don't know, AdSense is a Google program that places small text (and recently graphic) ads on your site.  Google uses a web robot to read your site and determine the subject so the ads are targeted specifically to your page.  The problem is that if you have a web site selling your wedding photography services then the ads shown will probably be for wedding photographers.  Even worse, Google recently started allowing advertisers to target specific geographic areas so the ads will be from wedding photographers in your area - your direct competition.

So, in exchange for about 30 cents (the estimate that I got last time I looked at using AdSense ads for my business) you will send a visitor that you worked to get to one of your competitors.  You just traded a potential 4 figure wedding for 30 cents.

My suggestion, leave AdSense off your business site.
